Matt found himself in a downward spiral which led him to being the heaviest and unhappiest he’d ever been.
He had always been fit and went to the gym several times a week before he moved to Amsterdam for a new job in 2017.
This was where the weight gain started as his gym routine fell by the wayside and he was drinking beer and living off takeaways every night.
The final straw was when he tipped the scales at 95kg and his self-confidence and self-esteem hit rock bottom.
Marketing manager Matt came to Ultimate Performance Amsterdam to press the ‘reset’ button and gain back control of his fitness, health and his body.

“My weight dropped from 95kg to 77kg. My body fat percentage went from 28% to 12.7%, and I’m in the best shape I have ever been in.
“Achieving this makes me feel like I can truly do anything I put my mind to as long as I am consistent and dedicated.”
Before starting at U.P. Amsterdam, Matt was at a real low point. He didn’t want to feel that way anymore, and at 27, he knew he could make real and lasting changes to his life.
“I started my transformational journey with U.P. because I hated the way I felt both physically and mentally. At 27 years of age, I was out of shape which resulted in low self-esteem and low confidence.
“So, I knew I needed to change, and the biggest thing was for me was just to get physically fit.”
Things came to a head when he found himself breathing heavily after a 10-minute walk to the metro. He knew that he had to make big changes, fast.
“I was always tired no matter how much coffee I drank, and I was out of breath doing the simplest of tasks.”
His problems extended far beyond the physical – he felt his unfit lifestyle was impacting other parts of his life too.
A couple of years of eating takeaway food and indulging in after-work beers were impacting his professional and social life negatively as well.
“Mentally, I noticed I was always in a bad mood. I’m normally a very positive and upbeat person, so this was very much not like me. I found myself easily agitated and had mood swings, from happy to sad at the snap of a finger.
“Going out in public, speaking, giving presentations at work, even approaching girls or attending social events – my low self-confidence definitely deterred me from doing those things.
“As the transformation continued and I gained confidence I definitely started taking on more at work.
“I feel like my performance increased because of that increased confidence. I took on some of those presentations that I normally wouldn’t have.”
Matt found it challenging to adjust to his new lifestyle at first, but the quick results he was seeing from his U.P. program really motivated him to push on through.
Diet was a big factor behind his transformation. Before he was eating and drinking whatever he wanted, but U.P. helped him create a simple plan that focused on getting him feeling his best in life, performing optimally at work and melting off fat in the gym.

Changing his diet and exercise habits helped him break the bad habits and get into a good cycle of training hard, eating well and feeling good.
